Welcome to Aarhus

The Warm Welcome Society is an exciting initiative for you who are new in Aarhus. It is your unique opportunity to get acquainted with the city’s many free time communities and to identify those that match your exact interests.

Jacob Bundsgaard, Mayor of Aarhus

The basis of The Warm Welcome Society, are a number of welcoming meetings that are held regularly throughout the academic year in Vanebrudspalæet. The welcome meetings are held within 11 themes, each of the themes represents different interests.  You have the opportunity to participate in one of these meetings – and it’s completely free!

At the meeting, you will be greeted by citizen hosts who will introduce you to a wide range of communities within the theme of the evening. You will also meet like-minded young people at the meeting, who are also new in town, and who share your specific interests because they have chosen the same meeting theme as you have. Together you will listen to information about the different communities, and then you will divide into groups based on which community, you find most interesting. You will then make an actual appointment to go a visit the community together with the rest of the group.

In the weeks after the event, you and your new friends, thereby will get the opportunity to visit a wide range of associations, clubs and grassroots movements in Aarhus. They have all arranged a warm welcome for you. You will also be welcome in the other 10 themes afterwards.

Registration

Just below here you can get an overview of the various meeting themes and the dates they are held so you can join a meeting within your favorite theme at a time that suits you best.

It is up to you to come alone or with a friend (but please register both of you – one at a time). You can choose the theme, you are most passionate about OR one you find exiting new. When you have participated, you will be invited to join other themes also, but feel free to sign up for another meeting if you find more themes interesting!

We look forward to meeting and greeting you and invite you to explore the city’s many interest based free time communities.

About Us

Who are we?

The Warm Welcome Society is a citizens’ initiative started by the non-profit organization GIVISME and lead by Thomas VovemoD. From day one, there has been strong support from the city’s higher education institutions (Aarhus University, VIA University College, Business Academy Aarhus, Danish School of Media and Journalism, Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering and Aarhus School of Architecture), as well as the municipality, each of which has helped to develop and promote the project. In addition, there has also been extremely strong support for the actual welcoming committee consisting of 72 free time communities as well as the many citizen hosts who will be greeting the city’s new inhabitants.

Warm Welcome has been a great example of cooperation between citizen initiatives and municipality and fits perfectly with the Active Citizenship Policy that was created by the municipality of Aarhus, together with 700 citizens in Aarhus.

All these players are now ready to give the new citizens a really warm welcome and invite them into the city’s many exciting opportunities for socializing and free time activities.

What do we want?

The purpose of the Warm Welcome Society is primarily to give you and all the other new young citizens the best possible start to your new life as citizens of Aarhus. We know how important it is to create a good social foundation, where you can share and grow your interests when you move to a new city. If you begin a study or a job, these needs are of course also met by your new fellow students or colleagues and all the activities which take place in and around the school / workplace. But with the Warm Welcome Society we want to help you complement this network, by showing you more of the wide variety of interest-based communities that exists in Aarhus and are all waiting to give you a warm welcome.

Big thanks to our project partners supporting this citizen driven initiative:
